Jewellery Care Guide

Diamond Jewellery Care

A diamond is one of the hardest substances on earth, but treat your diamond jewellery gently as a hard blow can still damage your diamond. Be sure to remove your jewellery before working with household chemicals such as hairspray or cleansers.

A Diamond Engagement Ring can be damaged by everyday activities like gardening and doing dishes. Be sure to remove your ring and other diamond jewellery for any activities that could cause damage and store in a safe place. Regularly check the claws in your setting are securely holding the diamonds in place or bring them in to us and our jewellers can check for you.

Jewellery Care

With gentle care, your jewellery and gemstone jewellery will last a lifetime. Remember to remove your jewellery before working with any household chemicals like hairspray or cleansers. To some gemstones even soap and hot water can be damaging. For seurity, regularly check that the claws in your settings are still safely holding your gemstones in place or bring in your jewellery to us and let our jewellers check them for you.

Pearl Jewellery. The first rule of pearls is that they should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. Their lustre can be dulled by hairspray, lotion and perfume. The best practise is to wear them often and your body's natural oils will keep them lustrous. Before putting them away, wipe your pearls with a soft cloth and store them separetely to keep them from being scratched.

Precious Metals

With proper care your platinum, gold or sterling silver jewellery will last a lifetime. Avoid exposure to chlorine and other household chemicals and be sure to remove all jewellery before house cleaning or gardening. Storing your precious metal jewellery in a soft cloth will help avoid scratches.

Platinum develops a characteristic patina over time. Your platinum jewellery can be polished to bring back the smooth look your jewellery had when it was new.

Gold does not require special polish, so a soft cloth such as Jewel Clean can remove dirt and bring back a beautiful shine. White gold is usually plated with Rhodium to enhance the whiteness. Rhodium is a shiny, white metal which is extremely hard. With exposure to water over time this rhodium plating wears off, revealing the original metal colour. Re Rhodium plating your white gold jewellery is a simple process our jewellers can carry out in our workshop to restore your jewellery's original whiteness when needed.

Sterling Silver can tarnish, but it is easily removed by cleaning with a polishing cloth such as Jewel Clean. Tarnish is most easily removed when it first becomes visible. The best way to prevent tarnish is to wear your sterling silver jewellery often.

Cleaning and Servicing Your Diamond Ring

We recommend having your diamond ring professionally cleaned and inspected once a year. If it undergoes some form of trauma, such as being dropped or hit against a hard surface the piece should be shown to one of our jewellers as soon as possible. These inspections help prevent the loss of your diamond in the event your ring has been inadvertently damaged.

Lazlo Jewellers provide a professional jewellery inspection service free of charge to our customers.
