Origins of the Claddagh ring
The short version of this beautiful love story, is a man named Richard Joyce, was kidnapped by pirates from the Claddagh in Galway. He was sold into slavery and a Spanish gold smith bought him. The goldsmith became very fond of Richard, and taught him how to make rings. Richard, designed and made the first ever Claddagh ring. Eventually, the gold smith, feeling pity for Richard, let him return to Ireland. Richard went back to the Claddagh in Galway, and he met with his long-lost love, whom, he gave the Claddagh ring as a symbol of his faithful love.
